Strawbs - The Man Who Called Himself Jesus

The Strawbs or to give them their original name The Strawberry Hill Boys were a local group to where I was living at the time. I first came across this 1968 release on the Juke Box in the Public Bar of the Red Lion, Hampton where it was a frequently played record, In 1972 one lunch time some one tried to persuade the Land Lady to sell him the record he was offering £7 (a weeks wages for me)for the record.
The Red Lion was one of the pubs that the Brewers decided would be better off with a manager rather than a Landlord just before the end the Landlady removed a number of the records from the Juke Box and gave them to one of my fiends he still has them to this day, a copy of this record was one of them other records were Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" & "Arnold Lane" both the Red Lion & its Juke Box are history now.
As a postscript the original Red Lion was burnt down to give the local fire brigade practice the event was filmed the film still exists though I have not seen it for many years, I can not imagine things like that happening again.

Gonks - Gonk Song

I have no information on this 1964 release.

Gonks - Gonk Song

Gonks - That's All Right Mama

I have re-posted this track as there was a snippet of white noise at he start, this was a peculiarity of Magix Version 15 as versions 14 & 16 do not do it, normally I edit it out but must have missed this track.

Gonks - That's All Right Mama

Peter Janes - Emperors & Armies

I first heard this record from 1967 on "Sounds Of The Sixties". I liked the song so I added it to my wants list I found a copy within 2 weeks. It is one of the few records produced by Cat Stevens, Unusually for a British release of this time it came in a picture sleeve, the sleeve is card rather than paper so is it an export issue.

Tom Glazer & The Do-Re-Mi Childrens Chorus - On Top Of Spaghetti

This 1963 recording was one of my favourites  when I was young my younger sister & me were dispatched of to Quaker Camp where this song would often be sung in the tents after bedtime.
I have read somewhere that this song is based on Dick Bondi's "On Top Of Pizza" in 1963 I had never heard of Pizza.

Tom Glazer & The Do-Re-Mi Childrens Chorus - Battle Hymn Of The Children

Angels - My Boyfriend's Back

This is a classic record I have at least 4 reply records to this record including a gay one. This record is 47 years old and has the Number AMT 1211, Lesley Gore's - Judy's Turn To Cry is AMT 1210 what are the chances of picking up records with consecutive issue numbers at the same time?

Lesley Gore - Judy's Turn to Cry

If Lesley Gore's record titles are anything to go by she must have spent a lot of time crying, this episode of crying is from 1963.

Jimmy Savile - Ahab The Arab

This 1962 record is one of two made by Jimmy Savile it seems that all up and coming entertainers were encouraged to make records at that time.

Undertakers - What About Us

I first came across this song on a cheap LP of Cover Versions called, The Mersey Beat where you got 12 songs for little more than the cost of a single often brought by well meaning Parents or Grandparents.
The Undertakers never managed a hit for their later recordings they changed their name to the Takers but the hits eluded them.

Mantovani & His Orchestra - The Valiant Years

I can remember the TV series The Valiant Years when it was first shown on TV. I thought I remembered the theme music but on acquiring the record it was not quite as I remembered it memory plays funny tricks.
At that time I would have run away rather than have to listen to The Sound Of Music.

Roger Williams - The World Outside

Sheila Hancock -My Last Cigarette

The story behind this 1963 recording that I heard was that Sheila Hancock had arranged to record a hard hitting satirical LP this was done and there was some studio time remaining rather than waste it My Last Cigarette improvised released as a single this is the record that the session is remembered for not the quite scarce LP.

Dominic Behan - The Captain And The King

This is a single sided demo from 1959 according to the Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide this is the "B" side. I have since found out that the songs were not catalogued as "A" side with the lower number etc. but as they were received and on Decca records the "B" side can have the lower catalogue number this can be very confusing and often you will need a promo. record to see what is the A side.

Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra - The Waltzing Cat

This record still has it's original sleeve not bad for 57 years both the sleeve and the record have written on them "Non-breakable" compared to the shellac 78's they were Non-breakable, I do not know when the words were dropped from the record labels and covers.

Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra - The Waltzing Cat

Ray Martin & His Concert Orchestra - Marching Strings

This 1953 45 single was only the second 45 single to be issued on the Columbia Label at this time EMI were issuing their 45's with a large hole and removable centre I have only once seen a record complete with the original centre. This tune is better remembered as the title music to radio and later television program Top Of The Form. The first Columbia 45
was also by Ray Martin.
