Erroll Garner - You Do Something To Me

This 1961 release failed to make the UK chart, by 1961 when this record was issued, the days of the piano players were almost over, people were getting rid of their piano's, there were so many around that nobody wanted a feature of a number of Summer Fetes  was a Piano Bashing contest  upright bpiano's would be attacked with a sledge hammer and be reduced to pieces to one reduced to the smallest pieces was the winner.

The secondary school I went to, in the evenings had been used by a youth club, the club by a lot of hard work had raised the money to go on a European Football tour playing games against other youth clubs, shortly before the tour was to begin someone at the youth club thought it would be a great idea to push the school's grand piano off the stage and onto the hall floor, this wrecked the piano the insurance did not cover willful damage, the money that the youth club had raised for the football tour went instead to replace the piano and the youth club was disbanded. The school replaced the piano but the piano was never ever put up on the stage again.

  2. I remember watching the 1964 Oliver Reed film "The System" ,when it was shown on TV in the early 70's.In the closing scene the local lads float a grand piano out to sea for a lark.My Mother commented that in the 60's everyone was ditching their pianos as guitars were the big thing .When I took up the piano in 1999 I was snowed under with offers of free pianos by people who wanted rid of them.....all I had to do was go and get them.......quite often they were on the first or second florr !

  3. Talk about a deft touch! At home with swing, at home with moody ballads. Died way too young at 53 in '77.
