Jackie & The Commuters - Day Trip From Barnhurst

I had not heard this parody of "Day Trip To Bangor" until I played it to download it.
In the late 70's early 80's the reliability of trains into some of the South London Termini was so bad  that employers would not give jobs to people who said that they would be using the  train to get to work. Between 1969 and 1972 I worked in Richmond  and lived in Hampton  in the morning there were a number of direct trains to Richmond all stations to Richmond then fast to Waterloo the most popular of these trains was the 08.20 as it got into Waterloo at 08.50 it allowed me to get into Richmond for an 08.45 start most mornings it was the first train cancelled often all the trains via Richmond would be cancelled.

In the 1990's I applied for a job with British Rail on the application form it asked how you would get to your place of work, I said by train, a couple of weeks later I got a rejection letter the reason they gave for the rejection of my application was " The transport infrastructure in your area is not reliable enough to guarantee you getting to your place of work on time" British Rail were admitting that they could not run a reliable train service.
